Exit from your Hotel/Apartment towards Aveiro, originally founded in the time of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The development of the salt industry, agriculture, and fishing, and the first cod-fishing expeditions to distant Newfoundland in 1501 brought the city a period of great prosperity in the 16th century. However, in the winter of 1575, heavy storms destroyed the deep channel that had once linked the marshy lagoon known as Ria to the sea. This effectively destroyed the city’s sea trade. The Ria was not joined to the sea again until the early part of the 19th century with the building of the Barra Canal in 1808.

Today the cities many hump-back bridges and canals and pastel-colored, Art Nouveau homes give it a genteel, relaxed feel. In the canals, you can see the beautifully painted boats known as Moliceiros.

After visiting Aveiro, you will stop in the Ilhavo region, in between the Ria de Aveiro (estuary) and the ocean is located this small peninsula where Costa Nova is situated. This is a place of ancient fishing tradition, where are situated the very traditional fishermen colorful wooden houses, providing color and a unique ambiance to Costa Nova. Also, you can visit the Lighthouse, one of the highest in Europe. After this, you will stop for lunch in a typical restaurant suggested by our driver/guide.

The final stop for sightseeing, Coimbra where you will spend the afternoon, famous above all for its ancient university: one of the world’s first with some of the city’s main architectural treasures, especially its beautiful library full of priceless books. This city consists of an upper and lower town. The bridge, Ponte de Santa Clara, crosses the Mondego River and leads onto the main square, Largo da Portagem, at its north-east bank. From here the lower town spreads out principally along the busy and happening Rua Ferreira Borges to the next main square, Praca do Comercio. A little further up Rua Visconde da Luz is Santa Cruz, a Gothic church housing the remains of Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, and worth a visit for its exquisite azulejos tiles.
