Portugal Holidays in Lisbon

While you may have experienced the Portugal of summer sun and package holidays, if you delve into the capital of the country there’s a whole other travel experience to be had. Lisbon is an outstanding travel destination for private tours and weekend breaks with lots of great bars, restaurants, and night-life to choose from.

Planning a holiday trip to Lisbon? Following are some recommendations of things to see and do:

The trundle of the trams will be one of the first things you will hear when you arrive in Lisbon. These iconic trams run throughout the city. One of the most popular routes is the Number 28. This route is the best way of seeing Lisbon as a whole. Passing through various major parts of the city, the circular journey will take you past several tourist attractions – Estrela, Chiado, Baixa and Bairro Alto, Graca quarter, the Sé, and Alfama. Enjoy the ride but do watch your bags as pickpockets are rife.

Alfama is the ancient heart of Portugal’s capital that survived the great 1755 earthquake. Most of the typical scenes that you may have seen on postcards from Lisbon can be enjoyed through the maze-like streets of Alfama. There are many things to see here e.g. secret stairways, museums, the birthplace of St. Anthony, Lisbon Castle, iron balconies decorated with flowers, houses decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles, and more. Step into the past and take in the atmosphere while staying in one of our places to stay in Lisbon.

Fado is the traditional Portuguese music that is usually sung by a woman wrapped in a shawl, wearing long skirts, accompanied by a Portuguese guitar. The music evokes what the Portuguese call ‘saudade’. The word means something akin to hope, longing, and missing. Bars in Lisbon are set up for tourists so it is recommended that you look for the smaller places where the locals still attend. Alfama and Lapa are good options.

You can reach the Belém district from Commercial Square via the number 15 tram. There are three most popular Lisbon sites here i.e. the Jerónimos Monastery and gardens, Belém Tower, and the Discoveries Monument. The place is crowded with tourists in the summer so try going in the early morning or on a weekday. It is recommended that you visit the Pastéis de Belém and taste the popular custard tarts first before making your way to the magnificent sites nearby.

There are many miradouros (viewpoints) across Lisbon. These amazing places allow you to enjoy the best views across the capital. Most of the miradouros also have a café or bar located close by so you will be able to watch the sunset whilst sipping a cerveja or galão.

From Fado bars to groovy night clubs; from modern architecture to ancient streets: Lisbon has something for everyone. Everyone from young to old is welcomed here. Enjoy your holiday trip with one of our Lisbon travel packages and circuits!
